Biography

Dr. Bill Schaffer is Associate Professor of Horn and Music theory in the Auburn University Department of Music. His duties include teaching the horn studio and horn ensemble, Sophomore Theory and Ear Training, and upper level theory courses.  His teachers included Philip Farkas, Michael Hatfield, Joe Neisler, Jack Masarie, and one year of compostion with Roque Cordero.

Dr. Schaffer has maintained an active performance schedule. His orchestral experience includes groups such as the Peoria Symphony and Twin City Ballet (IL), the National Opera Company, Charlotte Symphony and North Carolina Symphony (NC), and the LaGrange Symphony (GA). He currently serves as principal horn in Sinfonia Gulf Coast (FL) and second horn in the LaGrange Symphony (GA). He has also remained active giving solo recitals regularly since the early 1990’s and performing with various chamber ensembles. He has published numerous horn ensemble works that include arrangements and historical works, as well as original works for horn ensemble, solo horn, and brass ensembles.

Dr. Schaffer has been teaching since developing a large private studio in the Washington D.C. area in the 1980s. He has taught in both the public schools and at the University level with teaching experience that spans every level from Kindergarten to Graduate school.
